Overview

At checkout is a great place to add new subscribers and grow your SMS subscriber list! However, it's of the utmost importance to do so compliantly. Follow this guide to ensure your Shopify Checkout is configured correctly for SMS subscriber compliance.

  • Follow this guide if you're on Shopify Plus and have access to the checkout.liquid file

  • Enable the OCU Checkout integration to collect subscribers, attribute orders, and trigger valuable Flows if the OCU Checkout is used instead.
    📝This integration only applies to Shopify merchants using the legacy OCU app that uses OCU Checkout which is no longer available for purchase. If you aren't sure which OCU version you have, you can confirm the version by contacting our support.

Shopify Checkout

Shopify Checkout instructions include step-by-step information you will need on the 6-step process to get your Shopify checkout TCPA-compliant:

We've worked with some of the best compliance lawyers in the country to come up with Template text you can use for relevant steps.

Step 1: Update your Terms of Service legal page

  • Click the "Copy Text" button to copy it to your clipboard

  • Click the "Update your Terms of Service" button to be take to your Legal pages section of your Shopify admin (Settings > Legal) in a new tab

  • Find your Terms of service box there

  • Scroll to the end of the text already included

  • Add a new Section number there

  • Paste the "MOBILE MARKETING TERMS AND CONDITIONS" text you've copied to your clipboard

  • Click the Save button

  • In the Kinnekt app, check the "I have updated my store's Terms of Service" box and step 1 is complete!

Step 2: Update your store's Privacy Policy legal page

  • Click the "Copy Text" button to copy it to your clipboard

  • Click the "Update your Privacy Policy" button to be take to your Legal pages section of your Shopify admin (Settings > Legal) in a new tab

  • Find your Privacy policy box there

  • Scroll to the end of the text already included

  • Add a new Section number there, above the "QUESTIONS AND CONTACT INFORMATION" section you likely have there

  • Paste the "MOBILE MARKETING PRIVACY POLICY" text you've copied to your clipboard

  • Click the Save button

  • In the Kinnekt app, check the "I have updated my store's Privacy Policy" box and step 2 is complete!

Step 3: Request that Customers Sign Up for Marketing Updates

  • Click the "Update Form Options" button to go to Settings > Checkout in your Shopify admin

  • Scroll down to the "Email Marketing" section

  • Make sure the "Show a signup option at checkout" box is checked

  • Make sure the "Preselect the sign-up option" box is NOT checked

  • Click the Save button if changes were needed

  • In the Kinnekt app, check the "I have updated Email marketing section" box and step 3 is complete!

Step 4: Update your Marketing Checkbox Label

  • Click the "Copy Text" button to copy it to your clipboard

  • Click the "Update Your Checkout Settings" button to go to Settings > Checkout in your Shopify admin in a new tab

  • Scroll down to the "Checkout language" section at the bottom of the page

  • Click the "Manage checkout language" button

  • On the next screen, click into the "Checkout & system" tab there

  • Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac) on your keyboard and search for "Checkout marketing"

  • Find the field titled "Accept marketing checkbox label"

  • Paste the text you've copied to your clipboard

  • Click the Save button

  • In the Kinnekt app, check the "I have updated Checkout marketing section" box and step 4 is complete!

Step 5: Collect the Customer's Phone Number Compliantly

  • Go to Settings > Checkout in your Shopify admin

  • Find the "Form options" section there

  • Change the "Shipping address phone number" to Optional

  • Click the Save button

  • In the Kinnekt app, check the "I have updated Form options section" box and step 5 is complete!

Step 6: Add an SMS-Specific Label to the Phone Field (To Further Consent Confirmation)

  • Click the "Copy Text" button to copy it to your clipboard

  • Click the "Update Your Checkout Settings" button to go to Settings > Checkout in your Shopify admin in a new tab

  • Scroll down to the "Checkout language" section at the bottom of the page

  • Click the "Manage checkout language" button

  • On the next screen, click into the "Checkout & system" tab there

  • Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac) on your keyboard and search for "Phone"

  • In the fields titled "Optional phone label" and "Phone placeholder", paste the copied text

  • Click the Save button

  • In the Kinnekt app, check the "I have updated Optional phone label" box and step 6 is complete!

Once all 6 steps are completed (and boxes checked) the Shopify Checkout section on the previous screen will update with a confirmation badge indicating your checkout is fully TCPA-compliant to collect new SMS subscribers there!

OneClickUpsell Checkout

Enabling the Integration

This integration only applies to Shopify merchants using the legacy OCU app (black and green color scheme) that uses OCU Checkout which is no longer available for purchase. If you aren't sure which OCU version you have, you can confirm the version by contacting our support.

Clicking the "Enable Integration" button for OneClickUpsell Checkout will take you to the Settings > Integrations section of the Kinnekt app where the integration can actually be enabled.

Click the switcher from there, then click the "Authorize" button on the next screen to authorize your OCU app to share data with Kinnekt to enable the integration:

Making OCU Checkout Compliant

Once the integration is enabled, you will need to complete the same 6 steps outlined above for Shopify Checkout (if you haven't already) for your OCU Checkout to become fully TCPA-Compliant:

Since OCU Checkout automatically re-uses most Shopify Checkout fields and labels, the only steps which differ from the instructions above for Shopify Checkout are Steps 3 and 5. If you've already completed the steps for Shopify Checkout compliance, go ahead and confirm steps 1,2,4 and 6 for your OCU Checkout setup.

📝Only steps 3 and 5 will be covered below. Refer to remaining steps above for Shopify Checkout if you haven't yet completed those.

Step 3: Request that Customers Sign Up for Marketing Updates

  • Within your OCU Legacy app, navigate to the Settings > Page Defaults

  • Click the "Customize" button under Checkout Page there

  • In the Appearance section, scroll down to the "Accept Marketing" field

  • Set it to "Customer doesn't agree to receive promotional emails by default"

  • Click the Save button

  • In the Kinnekt app, check the "I have updated Email marketing section" box and step 3 is complete!

Step 5: Collect the Customer's Phone Number Compliantly

  • Within your OCU Legacy app, navigate to the Settings > Page Defaults

  • Click the "Customize" button under Checkout Page there

  • Click into the "Form Options" section

  • Set the Phone Number field to "Optional"

  • Click the Save button

  • In the Kinnekt app, check the "I have updated Form options section" box and step 5 is complete!

Once all 6 steps are completed (and boxes checked) your OneClickUpsell Checkout section on the previous screen will update with a confirmation badge indicating your checkout is fully TCPA-compliant to collect new SMS subscribers there!
