Overview

At checkout is a great place to add new subscribers and grow your SMS subscriber list! However, it's of the utmost importance to do so compliantly. Follow this guide to ensure your Shopify Checkout is configured correctly for SMS subscriber compliance.

  • Follow our guide for instructions on updating your Shopify Checkout to collect TCPA-compliant subscribers

  • If you've implemented the previous 6-step setup, follow the information below to undo the previous steps 3-6

  • If you're on Shopify Plus and have added the Kinnekt JavaScript code to your checkout.liquid file, please remove that from the file and Save it. Then use the new 3-step setup approach for Shopify Checkout gone over below 👇

Shopify Checkout

Shopify Checkout instructions include step-by-step information you will need on the 3-step process to get your Shopify checkout TCPA-compliant. Steps 1 and 2 should already be completed after initial app setup, but if not completed yet just follow the steps below.

📝If you've completed the prior 6-step Shopify Checkout setup provided in the initial Kinnekt App release, see this section below which describes how to undo the previous steps 3-6, as those are no longer relevant due to Shopify's new built-in "SMS marketing" checkbox which can be enabled in the Settings > Checkout > Marketing consent section of Shopify admin.

Step 1: Update your Terms of Service legal page

  • Click the "Copy Text" button to copy it to your clipboard

  • Click the "Update your Terms of Service" button to be take to your Legal pages section of your Shopify admin (Settings > Legal) in a new tab

  • Find your Terms of service box there

  • Scroll to the end of the text already included

  • Add a new Section number there

  • Paste the "MOBILE MARKETING TERMS AND CONDITIONS" text you've copied to your clipboard

  • Click the Save button

  • In the Kinnekt app, check the "I have updated my store's Terms of Service" box and step 1 is complete!

Step 2: Update your store's Privacy Policy legal page

  • Click the "Copy Text" button to copy it to your clipboard

  • Click the "Update your Privacy Policy" button to be take to your Legal pages section of your Shopify admin (Settings > Legal) in a new tab

  • Find your Privacy policy box there

  • Scroll to the end of the text already included

  • Add a new Section number there, above the "QUESTIONS AND CONTACT INFORMATION" section you likely have there

  • Paste the "MOBILE MARKETING PRIVACY POLICY" text you've copied to your clipboard

  • Click the Save button

  • In the Kinnekt app, check the "I have updated my store's Privacy Policy" box and step 2 is complete!

Step 3: Add an SMS sign-up checkbox to your Shopify Checkout

  • From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout.

  • Scroll down to the Marketing consent > SMS marketing section there.

  • Check the "Show an option to subscribe at checkout" checkbox.

  • Click the Save button.

A new SMS consent checkbox will be added to the Shipping address form at Shopify Checkout, below the Phone field:

📝For the customer's SMS marketing subscription preference to be saved, the customer needs to complete the checkout.

Undoing the previous steps 3 - 6

This section applies to any Kinnekt users who have followed the 6-step Shopify Checkout setup information provided when Kinnekt was initially released. Due to the new built-in "SMS marketing" checkbox which can be enabled in the Settings > Checkout > Marketing consent section of Shopify admin, the previous steps 3 - 6 are no longer required for SMS compliance and can be undone.

📝If you don't complete the new 3-step Checkout Setup above we'll continue to collect subscribers from the old phone number field only. If the new 3-step Checkout Setup is implemented, we'll collect subscribers from the new phone field only.

Undoing the previous Step 3

  • Go to Settings > Checkout in your Shopify admin

  • Scroll down to the Marketing consent > Email marketing section

  • If desired, check the "Show an option to subscribe at checkout" box

  • The "Preselect the option" box can be checked or not

  • Click the Save button if changes were needed

Undoing the previous Step 4

  • Go to Settings > Checkout in your Shopify admin

  • Scroll down to the "Checkout language" section at the bottom of the page

  • Click the "Manage checkout language" button

  • On the next screen, click into the "Checkout & system" tab there

  • Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac) on your keyboard and search for "Checkout marketing"

  • Find the field titled "Accept marketing checkbox label"

  • Delete the previous text added to use default text instead

  • Click the Save button

Undoing the previous Step 5

  • Go to Settings > Checkout in your Shopify admin

  • Find the "Form options" section there

  • Change the "Shipping address phone number" to either Optional or Required. If your payment provider or shipping carrier requires that the customer provides a phone number to complete the checkout, then set the phone number to Required

  • Click the Save button

Undoing the previous Step 6

  • Go to Settings > Checkout in your Shopify admin

  • Scroll down to the "Checkout language" section at the bottom of the page

  • Click the "Manage checkout language" button

  • On the next screen, click into the "Checkout & system" tab there

  • Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on Mac) on your keyboard and search for "Phone"

  • In the fields titled "Optional phone label" and "Phone placeholder", delete the previous text added to use default text instead

  • Click the Save button

📝When the updated 3-step Checkout Setup is implemented, but the previous steps 3 - 6 are not undone, we collect subscribers from the new field only.
