Connecting OCU to AI Tools with MCP [OCU]

Use the MCP tab to connect your OCU data to Claude or ChatGPT, so you can review funnel performance and build offers right from the chat.

Overview

If you already use Claude or ChatGPT, you can connect it to your store's OCU data. Once connected, you can ask about your funnels, offers and upsell performance in the chat, get recommendations based on your own numbers, and have the AI tool help you create new funnels and offers, all without opening the app.

The connection is set up from the MCP tab in OCU Settings, which appears at the bottom of the Settings list:

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It's an open standard that lets an AI tool talk to an outside service like OCU. You don't need to know anything about how it works to use it. You copy one URL from OCU, paste it into your AI tool, then approve the request back in OCU.

What the AI tool can access

Nothing is shared until you approve the connection, and you can revoke it at any time. When you approve, the AI tool gets:

  • Read access to your funnels, offers and upsell performance

  • Read access to your products, orders and revenue metrics

  • Permission to create funnels and offers

It cannot make changes to your orders, products or customers.

📝 The AI tool only sees the store you approve. Approving confirms you manage that store and links it to the connection.

Before you start

  • You'll need an existing Claude or ChatGPT account. Adding a custom connector or plugin is a feature of those tools, so if you don't see the options described below, check your plan with Claude or ChatGPT.

  • You'll need access to the store's OCU admin, since the approval step happens inside OCU.

  • Have your *.myshopify.com store domain handy.

Step 1: Copy your MCP URL from OCU

Both tools use the same URL, so start here either way.

  1. In OCU, go to Settings and open the MCP tab.

  2. Under Copy your MCP URL, click Copy URL.

📝 Always copy the URL from your own app rather than typing one in from memory. That way you're using the current address. Now follow the section for the tool you're connecting.

Step 2 (Claude): Add OCU as a Custom Connector

  1. In Claude, open Settings and go to Connectors. You can also click Open Claude from the OCU MCP tab to go straight there.

  2. Click Add, then choose Add custom connector.

  3. Name the connector Zipify OCU, paste the MCP URL into the address field, then click Continue.

  4. Continue past the authentication and OAuth client screens by clicking the Add button. Claude detects the correct settings on its own, so you don't need to change anything here.

  5. Zipify OCU now appears in your Claude connectors list. Click Connect to start authorization.

Now continue to Step 3.

Step 2 (ChatGPT): Add OCU as a Plugin

ChatGPT keeps custom connectors behind a setting, so there's one extra step at the start.

  1. In ChatGPT, open Settings and go to Security and login. Toggle Developer mode on.

    📝 Developer mode is what allows custom connectors to be added at all. ChatGPT flags it as elevated risk because it applies to any connector you add, not just this one.

  2. Go to Settings > Plugins, then click Browse plugins.

  3. On the Plugins page, click the + button at the top right.

  4. In the New Plugin window, fill in:

    • Name: Zipify OCU

    • Connection: leave it on Server URL and paste the MCP URL

    • Authentication: OAuth

    Icon and Description are optional.

  5. Check the I understand and want to continue box on the custom MCP server notice, then click Create.

  6. An authorization window opens. Click Sign in with Zipify OCU.

Now continue to Step 3.

Step 3: Confirm your store and approve the request

The last two steps are the same for both tools.

  1. On the Connect a store screen, type your *.myshopify.com Store domain, then click Continue to Shopify.

    📝 No access is granted at this point. You're only telling the AI tool which store to ask about.

  2. You'll land back on the OCU MCP tab with a pending request. Review the What the Agent Gets list, then click Approve.

That's it. The AI tool now shows Zipify OCU as connected, and the Connected AI tools card in OCU shows the tool name and the date you approved it:

Asking about your store

Once connected, just ask in plain language. You don't need to name specific reports or settings. The AI tool figures out which of your funnels, offers and metrics to pull, then answers with your live numbers.

📝 The first time it uses the connection, your AI tool may ask you to approve the tool call. In Claude this appears as a permission prompt. Allow it, and the answer comes back with your store's data.

Example prompts to get you started

Copy any of these into your connected AI tool. They're written generically on purpose, so the tool works out the specifics for your store.

Check how your upsells are performing

  • "How much extra revenue did my upsells make last week?"

  • "Compare my upsell performance week over week."

  • "How does this month's upsell revenue compare to last month?"

  • "Is my upsell conversion rate trending up or down?"

  • "Break down my offer responses. How many were accepted, declined, or timed out?"

  • "Break down upsell revenue and conversion by placement over the last 90 days. Which one is underperforming?"

Check your funnel health and find problems

  • "How healthy are my upsell funnels right now, and what's dragging the score down?"

  • "Which of my funnels have active issues, and what exactly is wrong with each one?"

  • "Which of my active funnels is underperforming on conversions?"

  • "Why aren't my post-purchase offers showing to more shoppers?"

📝 Draft products, out of stock variants and unpublished items can all sit inside a funnel that looks live but shows nothing to customers. Asking about active issues surfaces those. This pairs with the Needs attention tab and the Insights column on your Funnels list, and Insights on Funnels explains what each flag means.

Find gaps and opportunities

  • "Where do I have placement gaps, funnels missing an offer at a stage where I could have one?"

  • "List my open OCU recommendations, ranked by expected impact."

  • "Which of my best sellers doesn't have an upsell funnel yet?"

  • "What are the next steps I should take to increase my AOV?"

📝 Most stores lean on one or two placements and leave Cart Drawer or product page revenue on the table. Recommendations are worked out for your store ahead of time, so asking for them surfaces the ones you haven't acted on yet.

Research products before you build an offer

  • "What are my top 5 best-selling products over the last 30 days, by units sold?"

  • "Search my catalog for [product name] and tell me the price, inventory, and variant count."

  • "Which upsell products drove the most revenue last month?"

  • "Which products are most often bought as an upsell?"

📝 Upsell offers convert best when the product is already a proven seller, so it's worth pulling real numbers instead of going on instinct. Checking a product first also confirms the exact title, price and variant status, which is what OCU checks before it will let you use that product in an offer.

Build a funnel

  • "Create a post-purchase upsell offering my best seller at 15% off, triggered on all products, saved unpublished."

⚠️ Important: ask for new funnels to be saved unpublished.

Add "saved unpublished" to your request, review the funnel in OCU, then publish it yourself once it looks right.

Look something up in the help center

  • "Search OCU help articles for how Dynamic AI picks which product to show."

📝 Your AI tool can search the OCU help center directly and quote the relevant article back to you, which is often quicker than searching yourself.

Tips for better answers

  • Name a time period. "Last 30 days" or "compared to last month" gets you a sharper answer than "recently."

  • Name the funnel or product when you want to dig into one specifically.

  • Anything that only reads your data is safe to ask freely. Health checks, issues, top products, recommendations and help article lookups don't change anything in your store.

  • Anything that creates something needs a review step. Ask for it unpublished, then check it in OCU before going live.

  • Ask follow-up questions. The connection stays active through the conversation, so you can keep drilling down without starting over.

  • Ask it to explain its reasoning when a recommendation surprises you. It can walk you through the numbers behind it.

Managing and disconnecting AI tools

Every tool you've connected is listed under Connected AI tools on the MCP tab within OCU, with its approval date and a CONNECTED badge.

To revoke access, click Disconnect on that tool, then confirm in the Disconnect AI tool window. The tool immediately loses access to your OCU data, and you can reconnect later without setting the connector up again.

📝Important notes

  • Nothing is shared until you approve. Adding the connector and entering your store domain grant no access on their own. The approval inside OCU is what links the two.

  • Access is revocable at any time. Disconnecting from the MCP tab cuts the AI tool off immediately.

  • The AI tool can't touch your orders, products or customers. It reads your OCU data and can create funnels and offers. Anything it creates still shows up in OCU for you to review before you publish it.

  • Treat the connection like a login. Anyone with access to your Claude or ChatGPT account can ask that tool about your store data, so keep that account secured.

FAQs

What is MCP?

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It's an open standard that lets an AI tool connect to an outside service like OCU and pull real data instead of guessing. You don't need to understand how it works to use it.

My AI tool is asking me to approve a tool call. What does that mean?

That's your AI tool checking with you before it reaches out to OCU. It's normal and it's a good sign the connection is working. Allow it, and the answer comes back with your store's data. Most tools remember your choice after the first time.

Do I need both Claude and ChatGPT?

No. Connect whichever one you already use. You can connect both if you want, and each appears separately under Connected AI tools.

Is my data used to train the AI tool?

That's governed by your Claude or ChatGPT account settings, not by OCU. Check your AI tool's data controls. Separately, the AI Personalization setting in OCU Settings > AI Preferences controls whether Zipify uses your store's data to improve OCU's own AI features.

Can the AI tool change my funnels?

It can create funnels and offers. It can't edit your orders, products or customers.

Do I have to reconnect if I disconnect?

No. Disconnecting revokes access, but you can reconnect later without rebuilding the connector.
